Psalm 78:72 – Integrity of heart and skill of hand.

B. Moses made several changes due to demand on his leadership.

I am recommitting myself to these aspects of leadership as we walk together thru 2021.

Review:

1. Moses recommitted to prayer. Exodus 18:19

2.    He re-committed to communicate – verse 20

3.    He laid out a vision – verse 20

4.    He developed a plan – verse 20

5. He simplified his schedule to increase his effectiveness.

In a complex and busy world, people need a church that is simple.  The churches that are growing and full of life have a simple and clear way of making disciples.

  • Simple church leaders are designers.

  • They design opportunities for spiritual growth.

  • Complex church leaders are programmers.

How do people respond to simple?

  •  They have Desire for it

  • They adopt Use of it

  • They develop Loyalty to it

  • They Provoke Interest of it into others

  • They Help others use it

  • They find great Contentment in it

Simple does not mean unspiritual

Spiritual does not mean complicated

Process is important through all of this.

6.    He selected and developed leaders – verse 21

7.    He released them to do ministry – verse 22

8.    He did what they could not do – verse 26

C. Smart leaders get results. verse 23

  • God gave strength to Moses

  • God gave peace to the people

These two things always appear in successful leadership.  Strength increases and peace multiplies when leaders understand that they can’t do it all – and that they are willing to change themselves to become increasingly effective.

The Law of Process

Leadership develops daily, not in a day

“Like the horizons for breadth and the ocean for depth, the understanding of a good leader is broad and deep.”    - Proverbs 25:3

We overestimate the event and overestimate the process

To get from the point at which God calls us to the point to which He wants us demands the process.

100% of the preparation to get to the end game is in the process

1.    75% of ministers that start in the 20’s don’t make it to age 65

2.    The event encourages decisions and the process encourages development

3.    The event motivates people and the process matures people

4.    The event is a calendar issue and the process is a culture issue

5.    The event challenges people, the process changes people

6.    The event is easy and the process is difficult

Leadership is many faceted:        Why does it take so long to be a good leader

  1. Skills

  2. Experience

  3. Maturity

  4. Relationships

  5. Timing

  6. Culture

  7. Training

  8. Attitude

The secret of our success is found in our daily agenda!

Success isn’t big so much as it is necessary every day in small increments.  My life is shaped in the day by day when no one is watching

What can be discovered in our daily agenda?

  1. Priorities

  2. Passions

  3. Abilities

  4. Relationships

  5. Attitude

  6. Personal disciplines

  7. Emotional qualities

  8. Influence level

  9. Vision is evident in your planner

Bret-isms:

  1. Shortcuts never pay off – what you avoid in process you will spend in problem solving. Pay me now or pay me later

    • Please don’t take them

    • Not in marriage, finance, leadership teams

    • It’s funny how there is never enough time to do it right the first time but always enough time to fix it the second

2. Success is determined in the decisions that you make, not the ones that others make for us.

3. Little things matter

  • They are huge things in the process

We have limited energy. We can either create excellence or excuses with our energy

1.    Remember this as you interact with people

2.    There will be either one or the other as you deal with people

Changes I'm Making In My Leadership

Changes I'm Making In My Leadership

Changes I’m Making In My Leadership

Psalm 78:72 – Integrity of heart and skill of hand.

In life you see many types of leaders:

  1. Angry leaders – Moses himself was an angry leadership – struck a rock. He was only to speak to the rock.

  2.   Incompetent leaders – Bible id full of people who just could not do the job.  They had the title but that was all.

  3. Short term leaders – leaders who start but don’t finish.

  4. Frustrated leaders – frustration is something every leader moves in and out of – long term frustration ultimately renders the leader ineffective.

Smart leaders don’t try to do it all by themselves

A. Just because you hold a leadership position doesn’t mean you are smart.

Ex. 18:17-18 “Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.”

In Leadership - the biggest change must start in the leader

  • Moses changed his way of thinking

  • Moses changed his way of leading.

B. Moses made seven changes due to demand on his leadership.

  • Moses recommitted to prayer. Exodus 18:19

  • He re-committed to communicate – verse 20

  • He laid out a vision – verse 20

  • He simplified his schedule to increase his effectiveness.

  • He selected and developed leaders – verse 21

  • He released them to do ministry – verse 22

  • He did what they could not do – verse 26

C. Smart leaders get results. verse 23

  • God gave strength to Moses

  • God gave peace to the people

These two things always appear in successful leadership.  Strength increases and peace multiplies when leaders understand that they can’t do it all – and that they are willing to change themselves to become increasingly effective.

Leading During Spiritual Conflict - pt. 4

1.  Spiritual conflict is a reality.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 ESV

2.  We are equipped to fight spiritually

“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.” Luke 10:19 ESV

3.  The Lord is fully engaged in the battle for us

“The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.” Deuteronomy 28:7 ESV

4.  We should expect to be victorious in spiritual conflict

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” 1 John 5:4-5 ESV

“no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.  This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord.’ Isaiah 54:17 NIV

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:10-13 NIV

  • The devils schemes.

  • Our struggle

We are in this together=.  It is not me or just you – there is common ground – our struggle

  • Its not just people

Your struggle is not against a person, individual or group of people.  Why fight where the battle does not exist?

  • Armor is need for the intensity of the battle

  • The goal? – to remain standing.

the devil schemes - method, strategy, craftiness, planned deceitful procedures. And we are called to lead while that is happening.  The conflict is predictable.

What are we called to do - Lead in times of spiritual conflict.

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”  Eph 6:11

“in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.“ 2 Cor 2:10

The schemes of the enemy:

  •  Our thought life is a battlefield

  •   Unforgiveness

If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.  2 Cor 2:10-11 NIV84

  • Isolation

The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." Gen 2:18 NIV84

  • Intimidation

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

  • Manipulation

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Cor 10:4-5 NIV84

  • Condemnation

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.  Rom 8:1-2 NIV84

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  John 3:17 NIV84

This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 1 John 3:19-20 NIV84

What makes us susceptible to the schemes of the enemy?

  •  Fatigue

  •  Insecurities

  •  Broken relationships

PURPLE ROBE

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.   Mark 15:16-20

  • It was designed to mock and ridicule Jesus.

  • The color purple represents royalty.

  • The purple robe represented complete disregard, unbelief

  • But while the soldiers mocked – Jesus acted like a King

  • As they became vocal in their abuse – Jesus stood silent

HIS GARMENTS

When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, “They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.” So this is what the soldiers did. John 19:23-24

THIS GARMENT REPRESENTED THREE MAIN THINGS:

1. ROYALTY

2. GRACE

3. DIVINITY

HOW MANY HAVE TRIED TO STRIP DIVINITY FOR JESUS?

Every time in history man said – “IF YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD

Represents an effort to tears the robes of authority, position and divinity off of Jesus Christ. The devil in the desert– IF YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD –

People and the rulers at crucifixion – let him save himself if he is the Son of God The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.” LUKE 23:35

The soldiers – IF YOU ARE THE KING SAVE YOURSELF

and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” LUKE 23:37

The thief – AREN’T YOU THE CHRIST? – SAVE YOURSELF AND US

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!” LUKE 23:39

Even in Jesus death the robe of divinity was not torn from him

Instead it was Jesus chance to call his last enemy – death

Into a battle where Jesus would defeat death and the grave

This robe was seamless

Leviticus 21:10-12 (NIV)
10“ ‘The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt or tear his clothes. 11He must not enter a place where there is a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother, 12nor leave the sanctuary of his God or desecrate it, because he has been dedicated by the anointing oil of his God. I am the Lord.

No imperfection in Christ’s righteousness

Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. 59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.

60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” 62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?” “He is worthy of death,” they answered. MATT: 26:57-65

Jesus you are the true high priest!

What about the robe of Christ –

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining.

Jesus is our high priest – making intersession for us!

His divinity is in place this very day!

BURIAL CLOTHES

Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.  John 20:6-7

Easter Sunday God took the clothing of death and made it a symbol of life.

The grave clothes of Jesus are a silent reminder and proof of Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

God has the ability to turn tragedy into triumph.

Look again at the second ½ of Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

This year as you dress yourself for an Easter service – remember that the clothing of Easter is significant.  Jesus made it clear through the purple robe, the garments that were gambled over and the burial cloth he left behind – that he is capable of bring hope and lasting change to your life this Easter season.

Review:

Our thought life is a battlefield

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV

Doubt

Temptation – Accusation

Discouragement

This week, let’s look more into the Devils schemes:

1.   Unforgiveness – dangerous to teach and fail to practice.

10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.  2 Cor 2:10-11 NIV84

2.   We are to forgive one another to receive forgiveness ourselves

14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV)

IF – there is a choice when it comes to you forgiving others

BUT – there is a consequence if you do not.  Choice is yours consequences are not your to choose – they are handed out by God himself.

Anger: Strong Feeling of intense displeasure, hostility or indignation as a result of a real or imagined threat, insult, frustration or injustice toward yourself or others important to you.

Unforgiveness: The deliberate willful refusal to give up ones resentment and the “right” to get even based on the wrongful thought that somebody needs to pay.

Forgiveness: Giving up resentment against someone and your “right” to get even no matter what has been done to us.  It is the surrender of my “right” to hurt you back.

Please notice in Matt 6:12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

The word “us” is significant – it is not me, mine, or I – it is us.

Remember:

  • Forgiveness is not forgetting

17 Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” Hebrews 10:17 (NIV)

  • Forgiveness is not an emotion

  • Forgiveness is not easy

  • Forgiveness is not letting the other person off the hook

19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. Romans 12:19 (NIV)

  • Forgiveness is an act of the will

  • Forgiveness is for your benefit

  • Forgiveness is something we are commanded to do

  • Forgiveness is not an issue between you and the other person it is between you and God

11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. John 17:11 (NIV)

Last week’s review:

1.  Spiritual conflict is a reality.

2.  We are equipped to fight spiritually

3.  The Lord is fully engaged in the battle for us

4.  We should expect to be victorious in spiritual conflict

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV

Satan’s Board Sword:

Doubt

  • Questions are not doubt

Temptation and Accusation

  • Temptation and Accusation play off of each other.

14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:14-15 NIV

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.  Rev 12:10 NIV84

13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Cor 10:13

Discouragement

  • Why do we get discouraged?

  1. The battle lasts our entire life

  2.   We get tired

" Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up." (Luke 18:1, NIV)

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9, NIV)

8 Concepts that Define Leadership from the Life and Ministry of Jesus - Part 3

8 Concepts that Define Leadership from the Life and Ministry of Jesus - Part 3

8 Concepts that Define Leadership from the Life and Ministry of Jesus - Part 3

Review:

1.  Distortion - “You have heard it said – but I say to you”

2.  Drama – Mark 6:31

3.  Disruption – Matthew 22:15-21

4.  Disagreements Matthew 16:21-22

5.  Doubts – Luke 7:17-20

6.  Discouragement.  John 14:9

Last two concepts from the life and ministry of Jesus:

7. Difficult Conversations - John 6:66

66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

You can’t let fear of what might happen prevent you from standing on and saying the truth.

Jesus doesn’t change the standard. He turns to the disciples and has a moment - a tough moment. A difficult conversation.

John 6:67-68

67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve.  68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

8. Departures - Judas

Not everyone will make the whole journey. Some will drop out prematurely. Some will quit. Some will turn away.

A. Judas’ Chance - Jesus knew what Judas was - who he was - yet he loved him, walked with him, taught him and ate with him.

Jesus gave Judas a chance to change.

Look at the teaching that Judas sat thru with Jesus:

  • Luke 16:1-13 – the lesson of the unjust steward

  • Matt 22:11-14 - the lesson of the wedding garment

  • Matt 6:19-34 – lessons on money

  • Luke 12:13-15 – lesson on greed

  • Matt 23:1-12 – lessons on pride

  • Jesus even said – one of you is a devil John 6:70 – all this to warn Judas.

Judas never listened. He never applied the lessons to his own life.

It all comes to an incredible climax when at the last supper Jesus says,

"After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me.” His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.” Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon." (John 13:21-26, NIV)

Jesus was honoring and loving Judas.

Judas left the meal and betrayed Jesus.

B. A private Place.

Matthew 26:16 “From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.”

Mark 14:11 “They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.”

C. The Price.

Matthew 26:15 ‘and asked, “What are you willing to give me if i hand him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty silver coins.‘

This transaction is exactly what Zechariah wrote in his prophecy almost 500 years earlier.

‘I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter” - the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord to the potter.’ Zechariah 11:12-13

1.  Distortion - “You have heard it said – but I say to you”

2.  Drama – Mark 6:31

3.  Disruption – Matthew 22:15-21

4.  Disagreements - Matthew 16:21-22

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.  22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"

Leadership means make decisions not everyone agrees with.

Conflict is a part of leadership.

1.  Doubts – Luke 7:17-20

17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.  18 John's disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them,  19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?"  20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, 'Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?' "

As a leader you will have doubt.

Leadership is making the best decision possible with what you have, know, and believe.

Leadership is not the absence of doubt – it is the abvility to deciside with the information you have.

1.   Discouragement - John 14:9

9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

As a leader your position and title don’t cause discouragement to evaporate increased responsibility ensures your skill of dealing with discouragement will be call upon more frequently.

regarding the recovery from discouragement is found in I Kings 19.  The problems of chapter 18 are familiar to you all – Elijah calls fire from heaven.  He is threatened by Jezebel, he runs and in chapter 19:3-5 we see the manifestation of discouragement.

1 Kings 19:3-5

3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

In verses 5-8 show the remedy: Rest. Eat. Get Back At It.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

8 Concepts that Define Leadership from the Life and Ministry of Jesus

8 Concepts that Define Leadership from the Life and Ministry of Jesus

8 Concepts that define leadership –

From the Life and Ministry of Jesus

1.  Distortion - “You have heard it said – but I say to you”

Matthew 5

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

When perspective comes to you through distortion it is not accurate.  As a leader you must deal with distortion by maintaining reality.

Distortion is typically emotionally driven – reality will demand you engage with process and being grounded in your reply.

You have heard it said – but I say unto you….

2.  Drama – Mark 6:31-32

31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.

Leaders get to deal with drama.

There will never be a shortage of drama or trauma.

Leaders deal with drama by not overreacting.

Listen – deal with it – but don’t overreact. Don’t over react – when you do – your reaction will become the drama everyone is now concerned about – everyone thought you over reacted.

3.  Disruption – Matthew 22:15-21

15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[a] to Caesar or not?”

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

The unexpected will happen.

Leaders learn to expect the unexpected. How can you expect what you don’t expect?

You accept the fact that the unexpected occurs – then you schedule to be able to adapt.  The more last minute you function to more likely the unexpected will have devastating results.

Planning and preparation can greatly reduce disruption.

For the disruptions that are not controlled by planning scripture gives us a great equation – control what is in your control – pray about that which is out of your control.

As a leader if you fail to pray you increase the unexpected – prayer is when God helps you.

Plan - Prepare - Pray.

 Acts 2:22-35

1.  Don’t get of track

22 "And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.

2.  Don’t forget the lost people

24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord

Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.

3.  Be prepared to deal with difficult people

29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.

30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.

31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

4.  Never forget the role God has in all things

32 "Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified

5.  Practice generosity

33 I have not coveted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.

34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions.

35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "

Acts 20:18-24

18 When they arrived, he said to them: "You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia.

19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews.

20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.

21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.

22 "And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.

23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.

24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord

Purpose to poses the right attitude:

1.   Make Ministry about Jesus rather than making it about you.

2.   Always put in more than you take out

3.   Teach the truth – don’t hold back

4.   Follow the Spirit of God

Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.

Attitudes and Actions of Paul

Attitudes and Actions of Paul

Attitudes and Actions of Paul

1 Corinthians 11 is what I call Paul’s resume on difficulties. It is an amazing list of challenges, assaults, neglect and difficulties. Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, lays it out as a fact sheet of his life.

1 Corinthians 11:24-33 I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.

24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one.

25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea,

26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false brothers.

27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked.

28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.

29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness

31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever, knows that I am not lying.

32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.

33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.

What attitudes, what actions, what choices did Paul adopt to allow his effectiveness to be so great in the face of such challenges?

What can I learn from Paul to assist me today as I strive for effectiveness in Ministry?

Acts 20 we see the attitudes and actions of Paul that will help us minister effectively in our current situation.

Acts 20:19-22

1.   Make Ministry about Jesus rather than making it about you.

19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews.

2.   Always put in more than you take out

19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews.

3.   Teach the truth – don’t hold back

20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.

4.   Follow the Spirit of God

22 "And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.

Where Are The Daniel's?

Where Are The Daniel's?

Where are the Daniel’s?

Daniel was recognized as a great, wise, and righteous man of God by his contemporary prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel 14:14,20; 28:3

Daniel is the gold standard for living a godly life in a godless society.  Daniel sets the bar for how to honor God and refuse compromise while not rebelling against governing authorities.

Daniel maintained a vibrant faith in God despite living and working in an ungodly culture surrounded by unbelievers.

What does it take to live uncompromisingly for God in a Godless environment? From the time Daniel arrived in Babylon, the pressure was on to be indoctrinated into the Babylonian culture.

And yet despite all the brainwashing, these four men stayed true to the faith of their fathers, living and working (and even thriving) in that culture without letting it undermine their relationship with God (just like we are challenged to do today!).

Daniel served under five different kings.

 Daniel 6:28. Daniel Prospered

“He had served five kings: Nebuchadnezzar, Evil-merodach, Belshazzar, Darius, and Cyrus.

Few courtiers have had so long a reign, served so many masters without flattering any, been more successful in their management of public affairs, been so useful to the states where they were in office, or have been more owned of God, or have left such an example to posterity.” (Clarke, Commentary, 4:590.)

Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar ransacked Jerusalem and, in the process, took many of the Children of Israel to Babylon in captivity. When Nebuchadnezzar died, his son Belshazzar became King. He was followed by kings Darius and Cyrus. We know that Daniel remained in Babylon through the first year of the reign of King Cyrus (Daniel 1:21).

Respected by each.  Godly standards and stances won favor.  Daniel was not a rebel; he was faithful to God.  Grew in favor with four rulers.

1.   King Nebuchadnezzar

Chapter 2 – King Nebuchadnezzar has a dream the wise men are called to not only interpret the dream – but first tell the King what the dream was.  None of them can do it.  The king in 2:12 is so angry he orders the execution of all the wise men.  Daniel is hunted and found – verse 14 speaks in wisdom and with tact.

14 When Arioch, the commander of the king's guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact.

Wisdom and tact open doors of opportunity and conversations that anger and rebellion will not.

Verse 15 – a simple question opens the door for opportunity.

Verse 24 – he saves the lives of many – requests audience with the King

Verse 24 – 45 Daniel declares and interprets the dream.

Verse 46 – King Nebuchadnezzar repents.

Verse 48 he places Daniel in a high position and it blesses and benefits others as well.

48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.  49 Moreover, at Daniel's request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.

Where are the Daniels?  Men who demonstrate tact and wisdom in times of duress. Where are the men who call to God for wisdom and mercy?  Where are the men who speak confidently that they can help and assist secular leadership?  Where are those who will allow God's power to elevate them to influence – instead of rebelling against and fighting with secular leadership.

The three Hebrews stand in Dura would never have occurred unless Daniel saved their lives thru wisdom and tact.  In Chapter 3 King Nebuchadnezzar is at it again.  Making a 90’ statue of himself.  That story ends also with three men standing in defiance – dealing with difficulty in a God honoring manner.  Resulting in the kings decree

28Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

29 Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way."

30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

2.   King Belshazzar – Daniel 5

2 While Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them.

3 So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them.

4 As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

Godless King.  Godless actions.  Blasphemous actions against God.

God intervenes.  Handwriting on the wall.  Daniel is summonsed

11There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom like that of the gods. King Nebuchadnezzar your father-your father the king, I say-appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners.

Daniels previous actions stemming from wisdom and tact – not rebellion and anger will result in another king providing opportunity to prove the greatness of God.

29Then at Belshazzar's command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.

30That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain,

31and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.

3.   King Darius – Daniel 6

It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom,

2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss.

3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

Where are the Daniels who can lead their own lives – their own areas of responsibility in such a manner that God continues to promote, favor and utilize him to bring truth and change at such high levels.

4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.

Result?

21 Daniel answered, "O king, live forever!

22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king."

23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

24 At the king's command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions' den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den,

the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.

25 Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations and men of every language throughout the land: "May you prosper greatly!

26 "I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. "For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end.

Where are the Daniels?  Where are the people who undergo mistreatment by peers, deception, dishonesty – yet stay in a position of honoring God with their lives?

Where the Daniels that encounter persecution and difficulty with grace – wisdom and tact?

Where are the Daniels that refuse to be known for their anger and rebellion when godless leadership acts in a godless and foolish manner?

4.   King Cyrus

6:28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Where Are The Esthers? Where are the Moses?

Where Are The Esthers? Where are the Moses?

Where Are The Esthers? Where Are The Moses?

By: Dr. Samuel Huddleston

In Exodus 3:19 God says to Moses,”but I know that the king of Egypt WILL NOT let you go UNLESS, a mighty hand (Gods hand) compels him.”

Exodus 4:21b,”I will harden his (Pharaoh) heart so that he WILL NOT let the people go.”

So the first thing we see in the life of Esther and Moses as well is,

  1.        God is in control.

  2.         There is submission.

  3.         Preparation for the task.

  4.         Esther & Moses offer who they are.

  5.          There is fear. Moses had it (Exodus 3:14, who am I?)

  6.          Esther was fearful as well, 4:16 “And if I perish, I perish.”

This is us during this pandemic, may I remind you;

  • God is in control.(He is guiding us, he is guiding YOU my friend.

  • He still requires us to submit to his will.(even if we don’t like it.)

  • We are prepared for this moment in history.

  •  God only wants who we are.

  •  He understands our fear.

  •  Many of you have said, I’m staying where God has called me to serve and, ”if I perish, I perish.” I’m all in.

They remained FAITHFUL to the call of God on their lives. Because in the storm all the Esthers came forth and stood their ground.

In the midst of this pandemic God has raised up leaders today, men and women who know what time it is. They know what is going on in the spiritual world. They understand what’s going on around them, and they know what to do and are willing to do it. Esthers:

  1.     See the harvest.

  2.     They know God has called them.

  3.     They know who the real enemy is.

  4.     They don’t fight each other.

  5.     They understand sacrifice.

  6.     They are people of prayer.

  7.    They know the time is short.

  8.     They are not distracted.

Cataclysm and Chaos

Cataclysm and Chaos

Cataclysm and Chaos

By Dr. Jay Herndon

Each year the Officers travel the district, visiting the ministers in the sections, and we share a message that the Holy Spirit has laid on our hearts. It takes us two years and 24 sessions to complete the tour. But, once we are done, the message is indelibly imprinted on us… at least for the three of us who shared it 24 times!

Last year, we finished our tour on February 11. It was the 24th time that the officers shared a message the Holy Spirit identified for our district. You might remember the three lessons:

1.     To practice of Honor.

2.     To practice Biblical Leadership.

3.     To produce Spiritual Heirs.

The Supt addressed a fourth topic in his State of the District Address: To practice Reconciliation in relationships.

We finished the last meeting on February 11th. Withing a few days of that meeting COVID swept across the nation and the President declared a national emergency. The health threat spawned other consequences: shutdowns, economic collapse, bitter debates about science and constitutional authority. Conspiracy theories emerged about government and media.

COVID wasn’t the only crisis of 2020, but it was an accelerant, like gas on a fire, inflaming other social issues: politics, race relations, and a widening divide in our nation.

Superintendent Allen has been telling us that we are being tested. But none of us woke up on Feb 12 and said to ourselves, “Today we will be tested.” But there it was. Ready or not.

Tests are opportunities to show what you know, or don’t know, what you can do or not do, who you are or who you aren’t.

If you pass the test, you qualify for a diploma, or a job, or a higher test.

The subject matter of the test is always the point where GOD’S WORD IS CHALLENGED BY OUR CIRCUMSTANCES. The way to pass the test is to align our BELIEFS, our DECISIONS, and our EMOTIONS with God’s word. That’s how you pass the test.

So, I need to ask you. Did you pass the test?

God spoke to us about Honor. That was challenged this year. Honor is easy when the subject is honorable. The test comes when the subject is not honorable. Did we show honor anyway?

God spoke to us about Biblical Leadership. The whole world, even our own church, was pushing us to exercise unbiblical leadership. Did we pass?

God spoke to us about Reconciliation? Wow, we had lots of opportunity there—racial issues, social division, politics…. Did we pass?

I’ll let you grade yourself. I’m glad I am not judge! But, someday, we will be judged…. By a better judge than me!

So, this year the Holy Spirit has directed us to share some thoughts and lessons with our district about how to conduct ourselves in chaotic times.

One of the things the Holy Spirit has impressed upon me is to “avoid the black hole of the End Times.”

Let me explain that: A “black hole” is a body of matter in space that is so dense and the gravitational pull is so strong that it sucks everything into it, nothing escapes from it, not even the light. There is “black hole” associated with the end times, not a physical one, but a spiritual one. And we need to avoid it. You’ll see it in just a minute.

These past months have been chaotic. Many of us have prayed and wondered whether we are in the End Times. It seems like each day we found ourselves in a new chapter of Revelation!

So, let’s talk about the End Times a little:

When John the Beloved describes the End Times he describes cataclysmic events from 30,000 foot view: he identifies angels and demons in heavenly places, he describes fire falling from heaven and famines on earth. He talks about massive armies moving about.

But when Jesus talks about the End Times, he mentions some of these cataclysm events, but he doesn’t stop there—he starts to talk about the impact on the people. He says, “brother will turn against brother” “one shall be taken and another left” “lawlessness will increase, and love will grow cold” he says, “you’ll be dragged before courts.” Jesus doesn’t just talk about the impact of the brimstone, he talks about the impact on relationships.

Some of this is just a natural consequence of the stress to society—civilization keeps people civil. When the institutions of civilization are destabilized people become uncivil.

But the natural consequence only partially explains what Jesus is talking about. Because the catalyst of the End Times is not a meteor, a virus, or the collapse of the dollar. The catalyst of the End Times is spiritual. Spiritual things are happening.

On the surface, the last days looks like a complicated social problem. Natural disasters, International Wars, and Pandemic. On the surface, it looks like the proper response is to devise a public solution.

Bring out the guard.

Print money.

Vaccinate people.

A public solution to a public problem.

But it isn’t a public problem. It’s a spiritual problem.

In Luke 12, Jesus talked about the Last Days and he told them that it was a spiritual problem. But some people didn’t like the instruction. They must have thought, “We are living in the last days right now! Our problem is with Rome. We need to act now!” They didn’t like Jesus’ solution.

That’s the black hole of the End Times—seeing public problems and proposing public solutions. If you get sucked into that, you will hard time getting out. There is only solution to this problem, and that is Jesus.

These men disagreed with what Jesus was saying, and so they told him a story, in an attempt to pull Jesus into their black hole. The story is in Luke 13. Lets look at it.

“There were some men there in that season, who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifice.”  They implied that Pilate sent his goons to slit the throat of innocent Galileans while they were in the act of worshiping in the Temple.

Let’s think about this story:

Pilate was famous for the brutality and violent way he governed. He killed a lot of Jews. Pilate is guilty of many atrocities. But is Pilate guilty of THIS atrocity? Frankly, THIS story is not consistent with what we know about Pilate—we know that he acted swiftly and savagely to put down insurrections and rebellions. But slitting the throat of innocent worshipers? Even for Pilate, that is a little far-fetched. I think the story is embellished. I don’t doubt that Pilate executed them, but I don’t think they were worshipping when he did it, and I don’t think they were as innocent as the story suggests. Galilee was known to be a hotbed for agitating rebellion. I think Pilate discovered their plot he acted with savage swiftness.

The story here is what we might now call “outrage porn.” I came across that term recently. Regular pornography is designed to incite and inflame sexual desires. The producer often embellishes the image, removing flaws and enhancing the fantasy to amplfy the effect.

Outrage porn is similar—it is a story that is designed to incite and inflame outrage. It is often embellished: facts added, facts ignored. And when we read it, we have an emotional response that is so strong we have a physical name for it: “blood boiling.” When we read one of these outrage porn stories, we can’t help but be angry. If you are not angry, then there is something wrong with you.

This story is outrage porn. Their hope was to tell the story in such a way that the only reasonable way to respond is to be outraged. They wanted Jesus to shake with fury, and to take up the sword against the evil Pilate.

I wonder if there was a moment when Jesus was tempted to do that. It would be hard not to be tempted. Pilate was evil. Jesus was Galilean, these were his neighbors. There was a clear abuse of power. Jesus had a higher sense of justice than any man ever. Certainly Jesus was tempted.

But Jesus responds to them differently, “Do you think that those Galileans were worse sinners than other Galileans?” Wait, Jesus…. Were you not listening? The Galileans are saints! Pilate is the sinner here!  Then Jesus says, to these rebel recruiters, “The same will happen to you if you do not repent.”

Jesus did not join their outrage, this is a spiritual problem. Jesus wasn’t going to abandon his spiritual mission and take up a political cause. Jesus isn’t going to save the people through with a natural or a national solution. That doesn’t save people.

Tests are opportunities to show what you know, or don’t know, what you can do or not do, who you are or who you aren’t. The subject of the test is always the point where GOD’S WORD IS CONTRADICTED BY OUR CIRCUMSTANCES. And the way to pass the test is to align our BELIEFS, our DECISIONS, and our EMOTIONS with God’s word.

This past year was a comprehensive test—so many different factors that it seemed like a precursor to Revelation. Disasters, Disease, Division, Persecution. Some Christians got sucked into the Black Hole—they spent more time and emotion on public solutions than they did spiritual solutions.

My wife and I have a private saying, that we use to remind one another of this truth: “It’s not about the tuna fish.” Teri was hosting a lady’s tea at the church and she asked a deacon’s wife to organize the sandwiches. One of the newer ladies signed up to bring tuna fish sandwiches. Apparently, it is not proper to have tuna fish at a tea! And the deacon’s wife was furious. She confronted Teri in the lobby of the office. She yelled at Teri. She told her this atrocity would destroy the reputation of the church, she said it was all Teri’s fault. But the Lord spoke to Teri and said, “It’s not about the tuna fish.” So Teri just let her vent. And the lady stormed off.

After a bit, Teri went and found her. “Sister, what’s happening?” And the lady broke down crying. She told Teri that her husband had been diagnosed with advanced heart disease. He might not live. She was overcome with fear. It’s not about the tuna fish.

We see things happening in society. We are very concerned. Some things that make our blood boil. But there is something behind what is happening. We could respond to every problem, but we would merely be playing “wack-a-mole.” Until we solve the true problem, another problem will arise. God has not called us to a culture war. Our primary responsibility is to preach the gospel.

This was just a test. Someday the true last days will arrive. We know it will happen and we know what will happen. This society WILL be shaken, the world WILL pass away. We should not be surprised or discouraged. We may mourn it, but we should not lose faith over it.

What WE need to do is to heed to instructions of Jesus, call people to repent, ask them to pay attention to their own heart, help them to align themselves with Jesus.

Leading into a New Year

Four basics to start a new year of ministry.

God’s character, God's love and commitment to the church means that He prepares the church for what is next.

Last week - 2020 preparation – boot camp – not the battle

Not everybody makes it thru boot camp – those who do are equipped for a battle

1.   Watch your load

Hebrews 12:1

2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Scripturally we know that doing less is what produces more.

John 15:1-2

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

2.   Remember that God is at work in all situations.

Genesis 1:2

2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3.   Remember that there will be conflict.

2 Cor 4:8-9

8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;  9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

4.   Get ready to change – be flexible

New Year – New opportunity

New Challenges

New Victories

New Relationships

New opportunities for reconciliation.

I believe that 2020 was a year of testing and preparation for the church.

We were tested in many fashions throughout the year.  How did you do with the time of testing?  What did it show you about you?  How did 2020 shape you and mold you more into the image of Jesus?

  • In chapter 17 Jesse says to his son – David I need you to run an errand – deliver bread and cheese and bring back news of the battle.

  • Then David is tested by a conversation with Eliab his older brother.

  • David would be tested by Saul.

1 Samuel 17:33

Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth."

1 Samuel 17:39

David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. "I cannot go in these," he said to Saul, "because I am not used to them." So he took them off.

Leadership Lessons from the 1st Christmas - Part 2

Review last week:

1.  Somethings cannot be delegated

2.  Some things must be pondered and not declared.

3.  Religious people will create trouble for you

4.  Difficulty does not mean you are out of Gods will

Today:

5.  Blending of natural and supernatural a constant

6.  When God speaks to your heart let him change people’s minds

7.  In Gods economy the least of these can become the hero of the story.
